This course provide an understanding of fire protection systems including wet, dry, and pre-action sprinkler and standpipe systems; fire pump, fire command station life safety consider. Fire Safety Director are required in buildings having 100 persons above and below grade or 500 persons in the entire building. They are also required in buildings classified as occupancy Class J, which serve as hotels and motels.

The responsibilities of the Fire Safety Director is hired by the owner of the building to make sure that all Fire Safety Regulations are obeyed on the premises. He must develop and implement fire prevention and fire protection programs to ensure that all fire safety regulations are obeyed.

Responsibilities and Duties:

In case of a fire emergency the Fire safety director must activate the fire alarm and notify the fire department.
The Fire safety director should also send a runner to activate the street fire alarm box.
When the street fire alarm box is activated the runner must wait at the box until the fire fighting units arrive.
Then the runner must direct the fire fighters to the scene.
The Fire safety director must make sure that he and his subordinates know how to activate each of the fire alarm stations on the premises.
The Fire Safety Director must make sure that all exits, hallways, and staircases are kept free of obstruction at all times. An exit aisle at least three feet wide is required in each of these locations. This aisle is necessary to permit occupants to quickly exit the premises in case of an emergency.

Candidates must attend all training classes to be eligible to take the training course's final examination. Candidates shall be allowed two (2) opportunities to pass the Graduation Test. School Graduation Diploma will be issued after the candidates obtain a passing score of 70% on the Graduation Test. The Graduation Diploma is valid for only one (1) year in order to take the FDNY computer based exam (Z-50). Candidates who fail the final examination on the second attempt shall be required to reattend the course in its entirety.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

COMPUTER BASED EXAM PROCEDURES

(1) Scheduling the computer based exam: Applicants must take the Fire Safety Director computer based examination within the one-year valid period of the Fire Safety Director School Graduation Diploma.

(2) Requirements for the computer based exam: 

1. Applicant must provide two forms of identification, at least one identification must be government issued photo identification, such as a State-issued Drivers' License or Non Drivers License or a passport.

2. Applicants must submit the original Fire Safety Director School graduation diploma on test day. The Graduation Diploma is valid for only one (1) year.

 COMPUTER BASED EXAM - GENERAL INFORMATION

The computer based examination will consist of one hundred (100) multiple choice questions, the test
is approximately 3 hours. Applicants must obtain a passing score of at least 70% on the computer
based examination in order to secure a Certificate of Completion. Test questions for the computer
based examination include questions regarding the following areas:

1) Fire alarm systems in B and R-1 occupancies, including: a) difference between off-line and out-of-service b) fire command functions

2) Emergency procedures in B and R-1 occupancies, including:a) fire emergencies b) non-fire emergencies

3) Training requirements, including: a) fire brigade b) fire wardens c) evacuation supervisor

Additional Information

• Applicants with a Master degree in Fire Science or Fire Administration from an accredited 
   higher education institution will need to document one (1) year of applicable experience.
• Applicants with a Bachelors degree in Fire Science or Fire Administration from an accredited higher.
• Education institution will need to document two (2) years of applicable experience.
